Ready or Not; Here comes ITIL

The folks at the OGC in Britain have really started something with ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library). Sooner or later, most IT project managers will be working with ITIL in some way (either implementing an ITIL framework or managing projects that must adhere to ITIL processes). ITIL is fast becoming the de facto standard for IT services and operations management.

Check out this edition of CIO Magazine, which is all about ITIL...

Chaps,

You better believe it!

ITIL (being the de-facto approach worldwide now for Service Support and Delivery)is all pervasive within IT.

But it takes a special kind of project manager (if I may say so) to design, build, pilot and implement successful services.

It's a very different capability than delivering new software or ERP solution.

I always recommend to my clients that they hire a PM with the ITIL managers certificate plus a couple of years active experience in Service.

It's a different mindset. Think about it:-

PM's have to deliver on-time, to budget, to specification.

Service Managers have to deliver in real-time, everyday, with no downtime, to the Customers satisfaction.

The smart project manager embraces all of the above requirements and delivers Service Projects successfully - planning right the way through to benefits realisation (rather than the traditional - it's been in two weeks, we've had the post imp review - where's the next porject kick-off meeting).

Anyway, the OGC and the itSMF have realised all this and are in the process of seriously "upgrading" ITIL to "Version 3", alhough it won't officially be known as this. In V3 - we will be blessed with new complete modules on Service Design, Service Introduction (a must have for PM's!) to complement the existing books.

To learn more take a trip to www.dritil.com (hint: sign up for the free mailing list there to keep right up to date on new developments!)

Happy ITIL'ing!

ITIL is indeed growing, however, contrary to the view expressed above, version 3 is not the next biggest development. This is in fact the publication of ISO 20000, the emerging ITSM standard, due at the end of the year.

This will have a knock on effect for ITIL, and it will be interesting to see how it pans out. Organizations will be certified against the standard, rather than ITIL, which is one driver. However, individuals certify themselves against ITIL.

It is going to be interesting.

For news on these developments, you could keep an eye on the forums. Perhaps the one I mederate for, or maybe the one at Amazon, or perhaps http://www.itilcommunity.com, which is the biggest.

Another source might be the ITIL Newsletter, which has recently emerged: http://itsm.the-hamster.com, or the wiki: http://itil.technorealism.org

These are all quite useful sources, but whatever route you take, ITIL (and ISO 20000) is not going to disappear.
