While I totally agree that spirit or enthusiasm is more important than ability, I still think that experience is is even more important that spirit (in most cases).

The caveat is that it must be real experience, where the person has been there, done that, and learned from it. This also assumes that they're at least committed to the cause.

This type of experience I feel is even more important than spirit. I've seen several people in the past who had demonstrated great enthusiasm, but with their lack of experience they weren't able to fully contribute.

In contrast, I've seen people on projects who stepped in, did their bit, and then went off to whatever else they were working on. But their contributions were huge because of their experience.

I'm not at all surprised that people in the survey chose enthusiasm over experience, because, on the surface, enthusiasm would seem to weigh heavier. All I can say is, "Be careful what you ask for."

In the end, I think both are ideal, but if I could only choose one and my hide was on the line for project success, I'd choose experience.
