Scrum Project Management - What it is NOT

What scrum is NOT...

  • Scrum is NOT an acronym - it's just a name; however, the process includes a daily meeting that might be compared to a traditional rugby scrum
  • Scrum does NOT employ a waterfall approach - it focuses on iterations
  • Scrum is NOT the "big bang theory" - it focuses on delivering value early in the product lifecycle and then adding onto that basis in future deployments
  • Scrum does NOT require large amounts of documents - it focuses on results
  • Scrum is NOT new - it's been around since at least 1995
  • Scrum is NOT only for use on smaller projects - "Scrum teams" allow Scrum to be used to manage large, enterprise-level projects as well

This makes too much sense. It'll never catch on.

Seriously, I'm so glad you posted this. I think the approach needs broader attention in the IT industry, and it's important to point out that it's not some new, untested theory. This has been used for quite some time now with excellent results.

I think it's the organizations trying to use waterfall approaches on software implementation projects that are bringing down the "success rate stats" of IT projects.

In essence, Scrum is really about phased deliverables, so it insures quick wins, shorter time-to-value, greater focus, and better customer satisfaction. These are things I've been touting for years.

Hopefully, this will bring well-deserved attention to this proven approach.
