Portfolio Management - An Excellent Primer








For anyone trying to implement Project Portfolio Management, there's an excellent 6-part article from author and portfolio management expert Lee Merkhofer on his Priority Systems site. It's one of the best combinations of thorough research and accessibility that I've seen on the topic of Portfolio Management.

As Merkhofer wisely states:

There are five major reasons that organizations choose the wrong projects: (1) biases and errors in judgment, (2) failure to establish an effective framework for project portfolio management, (3) lack of the right metrics for valuing projects, (4) inability to assess and value risk, and (5) failure to identify project portfolios on the efficient frontier.


He goes on to support these five reasons, offering the latest insights and best practice examples. He makes logical cases, and everything is thoroughly researched. Best of all, it's highly readible and accessible, and not an exercise in theory. Supporting diagrams are excellent as well.

I particularly liked the section on Efficient Frontier, and this offers one of the best explanations I've seen on it.
