MS/Project is Dead: Long Live MS/Project

As reported in Computerworld and discussed here, Microsoft has announced MS/Project 2007, a new version that offers some usability and performance enhancements.

Perhaps the bigger news is that Project Portfolio Server 2007 has been announced, leveraging UMT's technology (which Microsoft acquired last year). It has the requisite bubble charts, strategy alignment tools, and what-if simulations. It even includes governance workflow, something long missing from the Microsoft suite. This should give the other big EPM tools a run for their money.

One thing worth noting about the Computerworld article (below) is the 20 million user base for MS/Project. Considering that the most frequently used project management tool is still MS/Excel, and that there are plenty of other project managers using non-Microsoft products, it gives a sense of how many project managers there are in the world. The last estimate I had heard several years ago was 16 million. That number is most likely quite a bit higher now, perhaps double.

Getting to grips with Project 2007

Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 - to be formal about it - has been on the price list and RTM (Released To Manufacturing) for nearly three months now. And it's still hard to find definitive manuals or books about how to configure and use many of the new features. There have been a number of white papers and promotional documents released. These typically address technical installation (up to a point) and quite a lot on the server side architecture.
But best practices for how to use the new time sheet feature, reporting the new budget category costs, using the new resource plan feature and so on are elusive.
Most information is being spread through blogs, such as Microsoft Office 2007 Project Blog and discussion groups.
Microsoft does offer courses which are loosely described as 200-300 level. Information on these can be found at the 'EPM University'. The curricula for the two courses offered at the moment do not look as though they answer the Best Practice questions. For now the best source is still individual experience!

Microsoft enters the project certification arena

This press release from Microsoft, timed shortly before the PMI Global Congress, announces a certification programme for users of Microsoft Project 2007. The new version of Project Server is due to be released in the New Year and aims to integrate further with other organisation systems and processes. Offering a standard for training does seem like a good idea. It will be interesting to see how the new certification from Microsoft, which has a reputation for setting its own standards, aligns with the PMBOK.

Microsoft Project 2007

Thursday's Microsoft Webinar was the latest event in the gradual unveiling of the future version of Project. It now has a name - Project 2007 - not really more imaginative than the development name of P12 but it does give a clue as to the intended release date. After the news about the postponement of Vista's release date, one can believe that Microsoft would tend towards caution rather than optimism in deciding a release year.
The product itself still shows its credentials as a beta release. The demonstration of the client functionality suffered from a couple of minor glitches. The functions shown include some which will be popular with people who have struggled with some of the constraints of earlier versions of MS Project.
The multi-level undo feature - instead of the current single step undo - gets a lot of attention. It does seem to have been a major technical challenge to provide the function and now one can afford to be a little less careful about keeping track of changes as you go through an editing session.
A neat feature is change highlighting. This is the one that shows what dependencies cause a task date to be the way it is. Useful when you have a lot of predecessors, calendar constraints and other factors.
Anyone who has finally mastered the nuances of Outline codes and custom fields will have a new learning experience. Outline codes are no more. They are just treated as another variants of custom fields with fixed value lists.
And more functions for organisations that track costs - resources can be flagged as budget resources and assigned at the project summary level.
Something that sounds like a good idea but will probably take a bit of getting used to is the notion of team resources. Resources are defined as belonging to a team using a custom field value - and the team resource is assigned to the task. Sounds like you need to be careful about working with max units, particularly if a team member could be on multiple teams.
Plenty to get familiarised - and plenty of time to get familiar before the roll-out.

Microsoft on Scrum & Extreme Programming

One way Microsoft's development teams intend to deliver products to market faster is through the use of agile development methodologies, such as extreme programming and Scrum. You may have seen some of our many other blogs on Scrum.

David Treadwell, corporate vice president of the .Net Developer Platform group at Microsoft, said that while Microsoft welcomes the use of methodologies like Scrum, "we're not mandating them, but we're encouraging them..."

"The other is extreme programming—the concept where you might have two people working on a given piece of code and the idea is that two minds are better than one. Because you can find problems faster."

Scrum process can not only be used for developing applications, but also to test them for quality assurance sign-off.

Microsoft Poised to Take the IT EPM Market

It's like the tortoise and the hare. For years, Microsoft has been evolving its low-cost MS/Project suite and capturing the IT market, while mega-EPM providers such as Mercury, Niku, and Planview focused on meeting enterprise portfolio needs.

Now things are about to change. As we reported a few weeks ago, Microsoft acquired UMT, a leading EPM consulting firm. This brought technology and expertise to enable Microsoft to release a truly enterprise-driven product. Since Microsoft still owns the IT market by a wide margin, this will no doubt steer IT organizations in this direction. Whether other industries follow suit remains to be seen.

Microsoft has code-named their new product Microsoft Office Project "12". It is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2006, so design work has been well underway.

PMI Delaware Valley Tools Conference

An interesting morning on Saturday at Valley Forge for the Delaware Valley Chapter 2nd annual tools conference. Apart from chatting to a number of interesting people with a variety of project management tales to tell, there were the presentations.
Ken Barnhart gave the keynote address. His opening story about planning and executing an attack through a minefield against vastly superior numbers and with a number of strategic constraints during the first Gulf War gave a real world perspective to the phrase 'mission critical'.
One of his views that really resonated was dislike of the need for heroics. When the heroes are doing their stuff - commandeering resources, breaking rules, ignoring risk management - the rest of the organisation has to suffer all the disruption and clean up afterwards. The overall theme was 'Value Recovery' with a strong emphasis on doing the work that adds the most value.
And then there was the closing quote 'the man who says he can - and the man who says he can't - they're both right'. Deeep!
For the tools presentations, one could choose three out of seven presentations. The Planisware, Primavera and Microsoft Project (by Ken Barnhart) sessions were all interesting and well presented. Eventually one was left with a sense of deja vu.
